How Can Schools Help Promote Physical Activity?

Today’s children are more sedentary than ever. In fact, only 43% of American children between the ages of six and 11 get the recommended 60 minutes of exercise every day. Unfortunately, their parents are increasingly sedentary, too. While there are many reasons for this shift in lifestyle, there are ways to ensure children are getting the exercise they need and deserve. Teachers and school administrators can play a huge role in teaching kids about physical activity, health, and overall wellbeing. But how can schools help promote better physical activity?

Bring physical activity into the classroom: With students spending most of their school day sitting at a desk, it’s important for teachers to ensure they’re getting active while in the classroom. While many teachers have a strict curriculum they have to follow, that doesn’t mean their students have to stay seated while learning 100% of the time. Teachers can create activities that not only allow their students to learn, but also to get up and get active while doing it. In doing this, students will be able to participate in fun and engaging activities to help them learn the curriculum and get some physical activity in.

Host events and contests: It’s no secret that kids love competing, especially if there are prizes involved. So why not host an event or competition for students to get involved in? Whether it’s for individual students or entire classrooms, motivating kids to get active can be easy when they’re working towards a prize. This is a great way to get the entire school involved and can not only promote physical activity, but teamwork too. These events can even help raise money for charities or school funding, which is a win-win situation.

Invest in new commercial playground equipment: One of the easiest ways to promote physical activity in kids is to invest in some new safe playground equipment for schools. Whether it’s simple outdoor playground equipment for preschool or custom equipment built for older kids, playgrounds are a place where kids can really get active. Outdoor playground equipment for preschools will not only promote physical activity, but imagination and social skills as well. Overall, investing in new playground equipment is one of the best things schools can do for their students.

So whether it’s hosting a contest, bringing physical activity into the classroom, or buying new playground equipment, schools should be dedicated to keeping their students active and healthy.

I have been in or around the playground industry most of my life starting at age 6 when my father started building back yard playgrounds. As I got older I developed an enormous passion for construction and business. In 2009 I along with my father and mother decided to give our full attention to designing and building commercial playgrounds. In just over 10 years we have gone from a small mom and pop company to a bustling small business that has the pleasure of designing and building custom play areas in locations around the country.
