Groundbreaking at Amy Bell Memorial Park

The City of Odessa has officially broken ground on one of the most ambitious recreational projects in West Texas history — the new Odessa Sports Complex and the 7-acre Amy Bell Memorial Park. At Playgrounds Etc., we are honored to be part of this transformational development, leading the construction of the commercial playground and outdoor shelter spaces that will serve families for generations.

A Major Milestone for Odessa

City leaders and community partners gathered Thursday for the official Project Kickoff Event, marking the beginning of construction on this landmark project located at the end of North Faudree Road, just past Yukon.

The ceremony opened with an invocation from Pastor Don Caywood of Odessa Christian Faith Center, followed by remarks from:

  • Mayor Cal Hendrick
  • Steve Thompson, District 2 Councilman
  • Mike Stewart, Director of Construction Management, Sports Med Properties
  • Corey Payne, Midland Basin Business Unit Asset Director, Oxy
  • Todd M. Watkins, President & Chief Operating Officer, The Kent Companies
  • Eric Sullivan, Founding Partner, The Sports Facilities Companies

The celebration concluded with a ceremonial kickoff, as local leaders threw and kicked sports balls on site — symbolizing the official launch of construction.

It was truly a big day for Odessa.

A Game-Changing Sports Destination

The Odessa Sports Complex is designed to become a premier hub for youth and adult athletics, tournaments, and large-scale community events. Once complete, the complex will include:

140,000-square-foot indoor facility

  • 10 basketball courts
  • 20 volleyball courts
  • Pickleball courts
  • Dedicated fitness and training areas

Outdoor amenities

  • 10 rectangle fields (soccer/football)
  • 12 diamond fields (baseball/softball)
  • Community amphitheater

The project is expected to significantly boost tourism, increase economic impact, and expand recreational opportunities for families across the region.

Completion of the overall complex is anticipated by 2028.

Honoring a Legacy: Amy Bell Memorial Park

At the heart of the development is the 7-acre Amy Bell Memorial Park. In May 2023, the Bell family generously donated 100 acres of land to the City of Odessa to make this entire complex possible.

The park will provide an inclusive space for community connection — a place where families gather, children play, and memories are made.

Playgrounds Etc. is proud to build the commercial playground and outdoor shelters that will anchor this portion of the project. As a Texas-based commercial playground company, we understand how critical it is to design play environments that are:

  • Durable and built for high traffic
  • Safe and compliant with industry standards
  • Inclusive for children of all abilities
  • Designed to complement the larger sports complex

This playground will serve as a natural gathering space for siblings of athletes, families between games, and community members enjoying the park year-round.

More Than a Sports Complex

This isn’t just a collection of fields and courts. It’s a long-term investment in Odessa’s future.

Projects of this scale create ripple effects — from increased hotel stays and restaurant visits during tournaments to enhanced quality of life for residents. With professional management from The Sports Facilities Companies, the complex aims to maximize both local engagement and economic impact.

For Playgrounds Etc., this project reflects what we believe in most: building spaces that bring communities together.

We’re excited to continue sharing updates as construction progresses and Amy Bell Memorial Park begins to take shape.

Exciting things are ahead for Odessa — and we’re proud to be part of it.
